Pill 'cuts ovarian cancer risk'

Taking the contraceptive pill provides women with "substantial long term protection" against ovarian cancer, new research suggests.

The longer the Pill is used, the greater the reduction in the risk of developing the disease, according to an article published in The Lancet.

The researchers found that this protection lasted for more than 30 years after a woman had stopped taking the oral contraceptive. Taking it for 15 years halved the risk of ovarian cancer.

The study, conducted by the Collaborative Group on Epidemiological Studies of Ovarian Cancer, estimated that in high income countries, using the Pill for 10 years reduced the risk of developing this disease before the age of 75 from 12 per 1000 women to eight per 1000 women.

It also reduces the risk of death from ovarian cancer before the age of 75 from seven down to five per 1000 women.

'CSX's radiothon raises money for charity

In honor of this past week's Martin Luther King Day and citing his "nonviolent principles," Radio One's Detroit stations Hot 102.7 (WHTD-FM), 105.9 KISS FM (WDMK) and Newstalk 1200 (WCHB-AM) partnered with the Detroit Police, the Phoenix Theaters and the Second Ebenezer Church to ask Metro Detroiters to drop off unloaded guns at the church on Dequindre in Detroit. Each person bringing in a gun was given a $50 gift certificate, while supplies lasted.

Mideast not funny? Four comics are working on it

There was rejection from both sides of the borders. An Israeli company declined to book them because it didn't "want to alienate anyone's sensitivities," Warady said. "I said, 'Yeah, I understand, it's because we're promoting peace.' "

When Hanania returned to Chicago last summer, several Arab American organizations that had previously booked him as a solo act canceled.

"No one would come out and say it, but it was because I'd shared a stage with an Israeli," said Hanania, who's also an author and a political columnist. "It's one thing to perform with a Jew. But the political ramifications of crossing that Israeli-Palestinian line are too much for some people."

Still, the quartet found a welcoming audience in a variety of venues, traveling from Haifa to Beersheba.

Pre-marital sex 'more accepted'

For instance, on reducing car use, it could be that inadequate public transport, or concerns about personal safety are discouraging people from catching the bus.

"On housework, the UK has one of the longest working-hours culture in Europe - it could be that if we want men to help out around the house more, they need to spend less time at the office.

"What we need to do is look at what is stopping people making that final step, and then come up with a way of encouraging them to take it."

Concern about the gap between those on high and low incomes remains high.

A total of 34% of people surveyed wanted the government to raise taxes and redistribute income. This represents a fall from 47% in 1995.

Bucking the trend

If anything bucks the general trend suggested by the survey of a "more tolerant Britain" they are the twin issues of race and poverty.
