| Educational Bond Could Mean Millions For NMSU
Next month, New Mexico residents will have the opportunity to make a positive difference for the state's universities and colleges. The General Obligation Bond for Education would allocate nearly $118 million for capital improvements to colleges and universities across the state. If it's approved, $22 million would benefit New Mexico State University. Half of the money would be used to renovate Gardiner Hall, the home of the Physics Department, which is about 50 years old. "There have been a couple of problems with asbestos removal in a couple of the classrooms. Compared to the many of other buildings [on campus] Gardiner Hall is just pretty outdated and maybe not all that safe," said NMSU student, Trevor Stevens. Robert Czerniak, associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, pointed out that "the building is so old that the infrastructure to a certain extent are worn out." The remodeling of the physics building will result in a science quadrangle at the university.
San Bernardino County debris removal helps with fire aftermath
In a Lake Arrowhead neighborhood of burned homes with blackened chimneys and foundations remaining, a group of men dressed in plastic suits and gas masks methodically packed dirt and ashes into plastic bags from one of the lots. The crew, specializing in asbestos removal, expected to pack about 500 bags full of dirt to be disposed of safely from the home. The property was one of the first in a debris-cleanup program begun last week. San Bernardino County officials hope the program will expedite rebuilding efforts in communities where more than 400 homes were lost in the October wildfires in Lake Arrowhead and Running Springs. .
Choices not easy for Mich. voters in Dem primary
The Democratic primary ballot doesn't include the names of Barack Obama or John Edwards. Besides Hillary Clinton, the only candidates still in the race here are Dennis Kucinich and Mike Gravel. Oh -- and the much-touted final option, Uncommitted. Michigan Democrats are, momentarily, the persona non grata of the American electorate: Instead of being wooed and seduced like Iowans or New Hampshire folk, they're being studiously ignored. For now at least, half the state of Michigan is in political quarantine, the virtual equivalent of Do Not Call. .
Blog Day Afternoon: Don't leave work without 'em
I apologize in advance, it appears our blog tool won't let me hyperlink certain URLs. If I worked for a slightly shadier publication, I would have happily written this memo to Dan Snyder. (third graf) If I worked for a slightly shadier publication, I wouldn't have great new products like CBS' we-have-some-sort-of-interest-in-this www.last.fm to plug. It's great, I've been using it all day. Makes me never want to use Pandora again, unless of course the people from Pandora are reading this. If I worked for a slightly shadier company, I guess life would be like this. (Craigslist does comedy) Paste this: http://miami.craigslist.org/lgl/549277994.html If I worked for a slightly shadier company, I'd quit as to not interfere with a long-distance relationship to Jessica Simpson.
